P a g e 16 o f 2 3
Criterion 2 - Emissions Reduced
19. Please describe any
other aspect of your
project that is relevant to
Social Justice and Racial
Equity:
As The ArtsCenter progressed deeper into this project, they switched
architecture firms and engaged with EVOKE. TAC was impressed with
EVOKE’s commitment to employee BIPOC architects. EVOKE’s past
projects showed a connection to community. A big part of EVOKE’s
process is to engage the community and incorporate those discussions
into the design, creating true community centers. Their website explains
their philosophy:
Architecture—the tactile manifestation of narratives—serves as a
powerful amplifier of societal priorities, beliefs and aspirations by
preserving the past, reiterating the present and signifying the future. At
EVOKE, we rely on the communicative power of architecture to unearth,
perpetuate and translate your project’s enduring message into a
remarkable, bespoke design.
EVOKE’s understanding of how a building can encourage and promote
change, to create a place of belonging and community, made this a
winning partnership.
Likewise, when choosing an engineer, Coulter Jewell Thames was a
natural choice. A dense and unique community, Carrboro poses many
challenges in constructing a new building. Coulter Jewell Thames has
decades of experience working in Carrboro and understands the
community’s dedication to the environment and creating a welcoming
town where everyone “Feels Free” to be themselves,
EVOKE, Coulter Jewell Thames and The ArtsCenter have engaged in a
unique partnership that will deliver the town a community center that is
inclusive, accessible and respectful of the earth it is built upon.

20. How many tons of greenhouse
gas emissions will your project
reduce/avoid each year? Please
list any data sources used and
show the steps of any
calculations. Feel free to submit
in a separate document if
clearly labelled:
According to the architects and general contractor, this project is
not at a point at which they can determine what the reduction of
greenhouse gas emissions will be with the implementation of this
proposed project. Until the project is further along, this number
cannot be calculated.
21.
