Project Name: Carrboro Farmers’ Market Compost Monitor <br />7. Please briefly describe the <br />proposed project and the target <br />population to benefit from the <br />program. How many people will <br />benefit? (100-300 words) <br />For several years, Orange County Solid Waste Management has <br />been providing free food waste collection on Saturdays at the <br />Carrboro Farmers’ Market. Participants can bring all food scraps for <br />collection, including those which are not recommended for <br />backyard compost. The organic waste is collected weekly by <br />Brooks Contractors, a local commercial composting company. <br />Approximately 150 patrons utilize this service on a weekly basis. <br /> <br />The organics collection program requires a monitor who sets up the <br />collection station, changes out full bins, counts patrons, helps avoid <br />bin contamination, and provides guidance to program participants. <br /> <br />This program helps the Town fulfill Ecosystem Recommendation <br />#3 in its 2017 Community Climate Action Plan, which directs staff <br />to accelerate efforts to study and implement a comprehensive <br />organics collection and composting program. The program will also <br />help the Town reach its greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal of <br />an 80% reduction in 2010 emissions levels by 2030. <br />8.
