44 <br /> Commissioner Bedford read the resolution: <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> RESOLUTION NAMING THE ORANGE COUNTY VISITORS CENTER CONFERENCE ROOM <br /> AS THE LEE PAVAO CONFERENCE ROOM <br /> WHEREAS, Lee Pavao served for eight years as an elected official on the Chapel Hill Town <br /> Council, including two years as Mayor Pro-Tem, and worked closely with Orange County <br /> leaders, board of county commissioners and Visitors Bureau staff to raise awareness of tourism <br /> as a key economic driver for Orange County; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lee Pavao was born to Portuguese-American parents, served in the U.S. Army <br /> (1956-1958) and after graduation from Dartmouth University, joined J. Walter Thompson <br /> Advertising Company (JWT) in New York where he spent a globetrotting 30+ year career <br /> including postings in five countries and responsibilities for all of Latin America, and ultimately a <br /> seat on company's Worldwide Board of Directors; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lee and his wife, Joan, retired to Chapel Hill, NC in 1988, and when Joan passed <br /> away in 1990, Lee threw himself into a second career as a community volunteer, town leader, <br /> advocate for senior citizens and economic development and growing the hospitality and tourism <br /> industry; and <br /> WHEREAS, The J. Walter Thompson Company, Lee Pavao papers, were received by the <br /> David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library at Duke University as a gift in 2019 and <br /> includes advertisements and advertising designs, clippings, correspondence, meeting minutes <br /> and planning documents, photographs, presentations, reports, slides, speeches and other <br /> materials relating to Pavao's career, primarily in Latin American offices in Brazil and Peru. <br /> Client companies represented include Ford, Kellogg and Kodak: <br /> https://archives.lib.duke.edu/catalog/owtpavaolee; and <br /> WHEREAS: Lee Pavao received numerous honors for his service to Orange County. From the <br /> Long Leaf Pine Award bestowed by former NC Governor Beverly Perdue, to Chapel Hill <br /> Historical Society's 2014 Town Treasure Honor to the /Orange County Visitors Bureau's <br /> Tourism Leadership Accolade, and dozens of additional honors; and <br /> WHEREAS, Leonel "Lee" Pavao died at his home on May 13, 2019; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of Commissioners does <br /> hereby recognize the late Lee Pavao for his community service and dedication to Orange <br /> County's economy through the development of hospitality and tourism by naming the <br /> conference room of the Orange County Visitors Center at 308 W.
