Moore, ext 2250 <br /> Proclamation <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> Mebane 336-227-2031 <br /> PURPOSE: To officially recognize March 2001, as Women's History Month. <br /> BACKGROUND: To recognize that the talent, energy, intellect, and determination of countless <br /> women who have shaped our destiny and enriched our society since our earliest days. The <br /> Orange County Commission for Women will celebrate Women's History Month with Pulitzer <br /> Prize Winning Cartoonist Doug Marlette on Sunday March 17, 2002, from 2pm to 4pm at New <br /> Hope Elementary School Auditorium. Mr. Marlette will speak about his grandmother's <br /> involvement in the local labor uprising of 1934. Other guests include The Raging Grannies and <br /> Sista Rhonda. Elsewhere, in Orange County, the Feminist Student's Union will be hosting <br /> benefit performances of the Vagina Monologues, and the Women's Studies Department at UNC <br /> will be hosting feminist activists including Marcia Gillespie, former editor of Ms. Magazine and <br /> President of Liberty Media for Women L.L.C. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br /> RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board approve the Proclamation <br /> and authorizes the Chair to sign it. <br />
