P a g e 17 o f 2 3
Criterion 4 - Capacity of Applicant
24. Please describe any avoided
financial costs or savings
related to the project and over
what period of time those costs
will be avoided/reduced:
Having paid compost monitors will guarantee that there will not
be contaminants in the bins. Contaminants create waste and add
cost: items have to be thrown out and sent to the landfill,
sometimes causing an entire bin to be rejected.
25. Does your project accelerate or
expand on existing programs
that already show positive
impact?
Yes, the project will enable the community composting collection
site at the Eno River Farmer’s Market to successfully continue into
the future. Having paid compost monitors will assure that only
items that are appropriate for industrial composting are collected.
If the collection is not carefully monitored, much of the effort of
the collection will be undermined as bins with inappropriate (non-
compostable “contaminants”) items will be discarded and sent to
the landfill.
26. Does your project also take
advantage of other funding
sources?
The collection and composting is paid for by Orange County Solid
Waste.
27. Would your proposed project
help you to take advantage of
funding from other sources
besides this grant in the future?
Our chances of getting funding from other sources for paid
compost monitors may improve as the project proves successful
and enduring. We will continue to research long-term funding
opportunities. In addition, we may be able to operate with less
oversight as the users become more familiar with what we are
able to compost and what constitutes a “contaminant.”
28. Please describe any other
aspect of your project that is
relevant to the efficient use of
grant funds:
We will utilize volunteers in addition to paid compost monitors in
order to support and enhance our composting project.

29. Please describe any projects
that you have completed
successfully in the past which
are similar to the project you
are proposing:
We started our Compost Collection at the Eno River Farmers’
Market in May 2021, and it has proven highly successful and
popular with our ERFM customers and community members.
The ERFM has a history of serving low-income and minority
communities through its policy of doubling SNAP payments and
its Farmer Food Share Program. The ERFM has participated in the
Farmer Food Share Program Since 2012, connecting local families
in food crisis with local farmers. We are partnered with Orange
County Schools in Hillsborough, providing local families with fresh
food and food education from Eno River vendors on a weekly
basis.
DocuSign Envelope ID: AFC9D9B8-B7DD-46DF-8603-54762363FD20
