But <br /> my experiences outside of direct medical care are equally relevant. From working at the United <br /> Nations in Bangkok studying HIV transmission in Southeast Asia, to teaching preventive health <br /> to incarcerated juveniles in Richmond, Virginia, to volunteering to provide care to people <br /> experiencing homelessness in Pittsburgh, Manhattan, and San Diego, I have a diverse <br /> background in both caring directly for our most vulnerable fellow Americans and advocating for <br /> them on a larger level. I completed a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins, and this <br /> combined with my training and practice in Baltimore starkly revealed how great the needs are <br /> right here in America, in my neighborhoods. I believe that my clinical experience and my public <br /> health work provide me a solid background to be a very useful member of the Orange County <br /> Board of Health. <br /> Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: <br /> Healthcare disparities and lack of access are among this country s greatest moral shortcomings, <br /> and through research and action we can actually rectify this. Here in Orange County, as in many <br /> parts of the country, some of us enjoy excellent healthcare access and outcomes while others <br /> struggle to have basic needs met.
