The HPC is also charged with providing guidance and a forum for public comments on <br /> National Register nominations and administering the Local Landmark Program as outlined in the <br /> Certified Local Government Program. <br /> What are your Commission's most important accomplishments? <br /> • Historic Resources Book Project: The HPC is nearing completion of its major project to publish <br /> a book documenting the historic resources of Orange County and Hillsborough, working in <br /> partnership with the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough. The project author has researched and <br /> written entries for over 225 historic properties, along with drafts of the historical and architectural <br /> essays to be included in this publication. We have contracted with a highly qualified book design <br /> firm to complete the layout, design and indexing of the book. The pandemic has pushed the <br /> completion date to late 2022. <br /> • Cedar Grove School National Register Nomination: The HPC completed its project to place the <br /> historic Cedar Grove School on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. Built in 1951 as <br /> the county's first consolidated school for African Americans, it was recently renovated by the <br /> County and is now serving the community as the Cedar Grove Community Center. <br /> • Schley Grange National Register Nomination: Completed a project to have the historically <br /> significant Schley Grange Hall nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. <br /> This was funded jointly by the Grange and County through Lands Legacy program. The Grange <br /> celebrated this event by holding a major ceremony on the grounds in September, 2021. <br />
