GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS 1
2
For Classification Type 1 and 2 piping, do not insulate valves, strainers, unions, etc. unless indicated 3
hereinafter. For Classification Type 3 piping, install insulation over fittings, valves, strainers, flanges, 4
unions, and other specialties with continuous thermal and vapor-retarder integrity unless otherwise 5
indicated. 6
7
Install insulation materials, accessories, and finishes with smooth, straight, and even surfaces; free of voids 8
throughout the length of piping including fittings, valves, and specialties. 9
Install insulation materials, forms, vapor barriers or retarders, jackets, and thicknesses required for each item of pipe 10
system as specified in insulation system schedules. 11
12
Insulate pipe elbows using preformed fitting insulation or mitered sections made from same material and density as 13
adjacent pipe insulation. Each piece shall be butted tightly against adjoining piece and bonded with adhesive. Fill 14
joints, seams, voids, and irregular surfaces with insulating cement finished to a smooth, hard, and uniform contour 15
that is uniform with adjoining pipe insulation. 16
17
Insulate tee fittings with preformed fitting insulation or sectional pipe insulation of same material and thickness as 18
used for adjacent pipe. Cut sectional pipe insulation to fit. Butt each section closely to the next and hold in place with 19
tie wire. Bond pieces with adhesive. 20
21
Insulate valves using preformed fitting insulation or sectional pipe insulation of same material, density, and thickness 22
as used for adjacent pipe. Overlap adjoining pipe insulation by not less than two times the thickness of pipe 23
insulation, or one pipe diameter, whichever is thicker. For valves, insulate up to and including the bonnets, valve 24
stuffing-box studs, bolts, and nuts. Fill joints, seams, and irregular surfaces with insulating cement. 25
26
Insulate flanges and unions using a section of oversized preformed pipe insulation. Overlap adjoining pipe insulation 27
by not less than two times the thickness of pipe insulation, or one pipe diameter, whichever is thicker. 28
29
Install removable insulation covers for valves and piping specialties and where indicated on the Drawings. 30
Installation shall conform to the following: 31
32
Make removable flange and union insulation from sectional pipe insulation of same thickness as that on 33
adjoining pipe. Install same insulation jacket as adjoining pipe insulation. 34
35
Construct removable valve insulation covers in same manner as for flanges, except divide the two-part 36
section on the vertical center line of valve body. 37
38
Install insulation accessories compatible with insulation materials and suitable for the service. Install accessories that 39
do not corrode, soften, or otherwise attack insulation or jacket in either wet or dry state. Install insulation with 40
longitudinal seams at top and bottom of horizontal runs. 41
42
Install multiple layers of insulation with longitudinal and end seams staggered. Do not weld pins, clips, or other 43
insulation attachment devices to piping, fittings, and specialties. 44
45
Keep insulation materials dry during application and finishing. 46
47
Install insulation with tight longitudinal seams and end joints. Bond seams and joints with adhesive recommended by 48
insulation material manufacturer. 49
50
Install insulation with least number of joints practical. 51
52
Where vapor barrier is indicated, seal joints, seams, and penetrations in insulation at hangers, supports, anchors, and 53
other projections with vapor-barrier mastic. 54
