These nominations included the Masser Orange Address
Database (MOAD); Wheels for Work Program; Emergency Preparedness Pocket Guide goal
application with Durham and Miami Counties); and the DeconsfrucYion Project.
The County was recently notrfled that the Deconstruction Project was one of four winners in the
General Government category. Wilbert Mdacou, Public Works Director, submitted the project.
Specifically, the project involved the reconstruction, as opposed to the demolishing, of an
existing County building. The building was part of the Richard E. Winged Human Services
complex and most recently housed Orange Industries, a sheltered workshop. The project
involved the reusing of materials recovered from the deconstruction process for repair and new
construction by the County. The estimated value of the recovered materials Is $37,130. In
atltlhicn. the County was able to minimize, to the extent passible, the amount of construction
and demolition waste Iandflled. This included the recyding of 1.05 tons of white goods and
5.99 tons of metal, as well as the reuse of materials recovered The county renovation projects
identified to use the recovered materials Include flooring at the newly renovated Purchasing and
Central Services Building, bricks for rebuilding a retaining wall at the W hitted Building and
multiple uses at the soon-to-be renovated Southern Human Services Conference Facility.
The estimated cost for the demolition and disposal of this building was $50,000 versus $37,929
for deconstruction; thus a savings of $12,071, not including the $37,130 of recovered materials
value.
