oC <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />RESOLUTION OF RECOGNITION ON <br />UNC WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM WINNING THE <br />2003 NCAA WOMEN'S COLLEGE CUP <br />WHEREAS, on December 7, 2003, the University of North Carolina Women's <br />soccer team captured the NCAA Women's College Cup; and, <br />WHEREAS, under the guidance of Head Coach Anson Dorrance, UNC earned its <br />18th national title since 1981; and, <br />WHEREAS, The Tar Heels completed a sweep of six NCAA shutouts to finish with <br />a 27-0 record, the best in the sport's history; and, <br />WHEREAS, the University of North Carolina women's soccer team and head <br />coach Anson Dorrance have placed Chapel Hill and Orange County on the <br />international soccer map; and <br />WHEREAS, soccer is an integral park of the social and athletic fabric of Orange <br />County; and <br />WHEREAS, the Soccer Symposium Task Force in its 2000 report to the Orange <br />County Commissioners found that over 4000 Orange County youths are involved <br />in organized soccer programs; and, <br />WHEREAS, the 2001 Parks and Recreation Bond issue ratified by voters included <br />funds to create a Soccer Superfund to finance additional fields to be dispersed <br />across the County to support and promote the sport of soccer; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Board of <br />Commissioners expresses its sincere appreciation and recognition to the <br />University of North Carolina women's soccer team, both for their <br />outstanding achievements and for the inspiration provided by their athletic <br />leadership and teamwork, particularly to the youth of Orange County. <br />This the ninth day of December 2003. <br />Barry Jacobs, Chair <br />
