The Contractor shall obtain field utility locations by calling "Miss Utility" <br />forty-eight (48) hours prior to working in the vicinity of existing utilities. If <br />the utilities fail to locate, a second call shall be made providing an <br />additional three (3) hour notice. <br />C. The Contractor shall pay for any damage to and for maintenance and <br />protection of existing utilities and structures. <br />3.03 LAYING PIPE AND PLACING STRUCTURES <br />A. Proper implements, tools, and facilities shall be provided and used for the <br />safe and convenient performance of the work. All pipes shall be lowered <br />carefully into the trench by means of a derrick, ropes, or other suitable <br />tools or equipment, in such a manner as to prevent damage to storm <br />sewer pipe and appurtenances. Under no circumstances shall materials <br />be dropped or dumped into the trench. The excavation shall be <br />dewatered prior to installation of the pipe and appurtenances. <br />B. All materials shall be examined carefully for damage and other defects <br />immediately before installation. Defective materials shall be marked and <br />held for inspection by the Engineer, who may prescribe corrective repairs <br />or reject materials. <br />C. All lumps, blisters, and excess coating sha ll be removed from the socket <br />and plain ends of each pipe, and the outside of the plain end and the <br />inside of the bell shall be wiped clean and dry and be free from dirt, sand, <br />grit, or any other foreign material before the pipe is laid. <br />D. Foreign material shall be prevented from entering the pipe, drop inlets and <br />manholes while being placed in the trench. During laying operations, no <br />debris, tools, clothing, or other materials shall be placed in the pipe. Each <br />pipe shall be swabbed or brushed out as necessary to assure that no <br />debris gets into the finished line. <br />E. Pipe that may require field cutting shall be done so in a neat and <br />workmanlike manner, so as to leave a smooth end at right angles to the <br />axis of the pipe. Care shall be taken to avoid damaging the pipe and any <br />coatings or linings. <br />F. Pipe and fittings shall be strung out along the route of construction where <br />it will cause least interference with traffic. Commence at the lowest point <br />in the system. The downstream sections shall be completed, tested, and <br />approved prior to allowing drainage to enter the system. <br />G. Laying of pipe shall be commenced immediately after excavation is started <br />and every measure must be used to keep pipe laying closely behind <br />trenching.
