Presentation by the Planning Department on Goals for Growth and Discussion <br />The Planning Department made a presentation on goals for growth followed by a discussion. <br />The PowerPoiint presentation is incorporated herein by reference. <br />Craig SomalG made the following quote about planning'. <br />mhe role we have created today as a result of our thinking thus far has problems which cannot <br />be solved by thinking the way we thought when we created them -- Einstein <br />The purpose of this presentation is to amend the comprehensive plan to support the goals of <br />the Orange County Board of Commissioners. Development is inevitable in Orange County, so there <br />much be a plan for this growth. <br />The six principles of growth management include harmony with nature, livable built <br />enviranneintis place-based economy, equitable distribution of resources and services, properly mitigated <br />Impacts, and responsible regionalism. <br />The goals of quality growth in Orange County are environmental conservation (air pollution <br />reduction, protection of natural resources, open space and wildlife mrmor establishment, storm water <br />management, and watershed protection); economic prosperity (business development, efficiency of <br />public services, farmland preservation, safeguarding of property values, and tax conservaton); and <br />unity character (equitable detraction on of growth induced benefits, greater regional coordination, <br />historic preservation, rural lifestyle maintenance, traffic and automobile dependence reduction). He <br />elaborated on each aspect of the goals of quality growth. <br />The next steps include the creation of comprehensive plan elements (land use, transportation. <br />and housing): ob)eclivasl supporting policies and choices, and implementation tools. The sent will be <br />conferring with the County Commissioners and other boards far recommendations in the future. <br />Craig Benedict disbibuted a survey and explained the delete. <br />Several clari ying questions were answered satisfactorily by Craig Benedict. <br />ADJOURNMENT <br />Chair Halkiotis adjourned the meeting.
