ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: January 16, 2002 <br />Action Again <br />Item No. VAN <br />SUBJECT: 4th Annual Agricultural Summit- Farmer's Forum <br />DEPARTMENT: County Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Commissioner Barry Jacobs, 7324941 <br />Dr. Fletcher Barber, Jr., 245-2050 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 7324181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-0501 <br />Durham Sae-7331 <br />Mebane 335-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To support the 4th Annual Agricultural Summit - Farmers Forum. <br />BACKGROUND: The 41' Annual Orange County Agricultural Summit will be held on Tuesday, <br />February 19, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. at the Schley Grange Hell in northern Orange <br />County. <br />This years Summit will provide agricultural producers in Orange County another opportunity to <br />hear strategies for preserving their farms during this time of agricultural transition. Orange <br />County is proud and pleased to note that N.C. Secretary of Agriculture Mal Scott Phipps will be <br />the keynote speaker on this important topic. <br />Several speakers will discuss changes that are in the works regarding the use-value system, as <br />well as other legislative matters of interest to fanners. There will also be three breakout <br />sessions on plasticulture specialty crops, vegetable marketing, and analyzing and managing <br />possible new agricullu ral ventures. <br />Ames of discussion at the Agricultural Summit will be as follows: <br />• Record Keeping and Risk Management for New Enterprises <br />• Making Good Decisions- Howto test new ideas on yourfarm <br />• Orange County's Agriculture Economic Development Coordinator Michael Lanier will also <br />speak. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: Staff estimates the mat for the Agricultural Summit to be $2,100.00, <br />which Is already included in the Cooperative Extension departmental budget. <br />RECOMMENDATION (S): The Manager recommends that the Board support the conducting <br />of the she Annual Orange County Agricultural Summit- Farmer's Forum.
