1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: January 18, 2022 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 8-f <br /> SUBJECT: Human Relations Commission — Approval of Request for Changes to the <br /> Meeting Schedule <br /> DEPARTMENT: Human Rights and Relations <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> HRC Board Policies and Procedures Sharron Hinton, 919-245-2840 <br /> (Proposed Amendment) <br /> PURPOSE: To approve amendments to the Orange County Human Relations Commission's <br /> Policies and Procedures regarding the Commission's monthly meeting schedule. <br /> BACKGROUND: The Orange County Human Relations Commission currently meets on the <br /> second Monday of each month. The Orange County Schools (OCS) Board of Education also has <br /> a similar meeting schedule. As educational equity is one of the Commission's priorities, several <br /> members expressed a desire to attend the OCS Board of Education meetings. However, the <br /> current Commission meeting schedule prohibits attendance at OCS Board meetings. <br /> The possibility of changing the meeting date was discussed by the Commission at its November <br /> 2021 meeting. The members subsequently voted unanimously to submit a request to the BOCC <br /> that the Human Relations Commission meeting date and time be changed to the fourth Tuesday <br /> of the month at 6:00 pm. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this item. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goals are applicable <br /> to this item: <br /> • GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND <br /> INEQUITY <br /> The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br /> religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or ethnic <br /> background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic status. <br /> • GOAL: ENABLE FULL CIVIC PARTICIPATION <br /> Ensure that Orange County residents are able to engage government through voting and <br /> volunteering by eliminating disparities in participation and barriers to participation. <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal <br /> impact associated with this item. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the proposed <br /> amendments to the HRC Board Policies and Procedures regarding the Commission's meeting <br /> schedule. <br />
