11 <br /> I Slide #8 <br /> PUBLIC INPUT SURVEY <br /> The BEAG developed a 16-question Public Input Survey to solicit <br /> feedback from the general public regarding the election of county <br /> commissioners in Orange County. There were 413 completed surveys <br /> submitted in the two-week response perlod- Some of the aggregates from <br /> Survey responses were as follows: <br /> Demographic Responses <br /> •89.3%of respondents said they always vote <br /> • 16.46%said their voices were often heard,37.29%said sometimes,28.5% <br /> said rarely and 17.69%said their voices were never heard <br /> •35.53%said they arrived at the polls surprised at who they were voting for, <br /> 64.4%were not surprised <br /> • RacelEthn city of respondents: 59.76%white,3.98%African American, <br /> 2.92%Hispanic,2.12%murk-racial,212%Asian and 1.59%another race. <br /> 17.51%preferred not to answer. <br /> 2 <br /> 3 Co-Chair Patrick Mulkey continued the PowerPoint presentation: <br /> 4 <br /> 5 Slide #9 <br /> Election Method Responses <br /> •23.95%said they were satisfied with the current election method,41.05% <br /> said they were not satisfied and 35%were unsure <br /> • 30.79%preferred single member districts,13.95%preferred a combination <br /> of single member districts and at-large seats- 1526% preferred a <br /> combination of mlll ber districts and at-large seats;14.47%preferred <br /> multi-member distracts with no at-large seats.and 10.79%preferred all at- <br /> large seats. <br /> • 00.37%said they thought only people living in a bistdd should vote for that <br /> districts commissioner <br /> 6 <br /> 7 Dr. Lisa Hazirjian continued the PowerPoint presentation: <br /> 8 <br /> 9 Slide #10 <br /> BOCC ELECTIONS ADVISORY GROUP <br /> RECOMMENDATION SIFINDING S <br /> 1) The current system of mixing multiple representatives <br /> and at-large districts, where people vote in the <br /> primaries in the districts,and the whole county votes for <br /> district representation in the general election, is <br /> unsatisfactory and not acceptable based on the <br /> Group's research, 5AVjpt ry,M; r responses, and <br /> experiences of members as voters and precinct chairs. <br /> 10 <br />
