Throughout this time of uncertainty and unrest,
human beings on a global lev el hav e struggled with the ability to
remain in the present, without lamenting the past and being anxious
about the future. W ith people literally experiencing the loss of taste,
smell, and communal touch, my goal is to utilize this installation as a
way to re-engage the audience's 5 senses.
The methods used to create this work will include aromatics (using a
commercial oil diffuser to create the ambiance), photography (a
multi-exposed image of a double bass player standing with his
partner (a female dancer and her transforming his double bass), a
narrativ e short film (unv eiling the story of the bassist and dancer)
featuring original poetry, and mini gift bags incorporating real rose
petals, indiv idually wrapped chocolate kisses and a note of
inspiration. Following the film, the audience members will hav e the
option to leav e a note of encouragement for people to read through
the installation or simply express how they feel.
In lieu of in-person, I am planning a v irtual component. On the day of
the show, audience members will receiv e an email with a “Before You
W atch” list of instructions, as well as, the link to the experience. The
BYW list will ask that audience members find 3 items in their homes
that ev oke the sense of lov e (something to taste, to smell, and to
touch). During the experience, audience members will be cued to
engage with their different items. Following the experience, they will
receiv e a playlist of curated songs for inspiration and a call to action
to make something of their own (write a poem or letter, take a photo,
film a selfie v ideo, etc.) and share it with someone they care for or
with the world.
I believ e this piece is needed because we are all still in a state of
mourning. Griev ing the lost opportunities, budget cuts, canceled
experiences, and memories of what we thought would be the last 18
months. Howev er, I feel the quickest way to start the healing process
is to acknowledge the grief so that we can let it go.
Project Partners: UNC Arts Ev erywhere, UNC Univ ersity
Communications Department, UNC Department of Communications,
and The Kenan Theater Company
In the works: Downtown Partnership of Chapel Hill
DocuSign Envelope ID: 48CFDFAE-78BE-4FFA-BE3A-FC030E7B0208
