Grant Amount
Requested
2000
Project Start Date
(no earlier than July
1, 2021)
7-1-21
Project End Date (no
later than June 30,
2022)
4-29-22
Project/Program
Summary
Beginning in mid-July/early August (depending on space av ailability
at the Community Empowerment Fund offices in Chapel Hill), Dav id
Lyles will teach free quilting classes designed for Community
Empowerment Fund Members. The Community Empowerment Fund
(CEF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that serv es Chapel Hill,
Orange County, and Durham County community members that are
low-income, experiencing homelessness, or at risk of experiencing
homelessness, aiding them in their search for housing, income,
employment, and a sense of community. After a year of tremendous
loss and isolation, ev en more so for low-income communities than
for the general population, Mr. Lyles hopes to bring together the
community at CEF offices once again for his quilting classes.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic closed CEF offices in 2020, Mr. Lyles
conducted weekly quilting courses for CEF Members from 2016 to
2020. Courses are offered free of charge, as any entrance fee would
prov e prohibitiv e for community members that CEF serv es, and are
designed to accommodate all lev els of experience. Between 2017
and 2020, quilting classes consistently maintained between 10 and 25
participants of all ages and abilities. Mr. Lyles has prov ided all of the
materials, patience and care necessary for the quilting classes to go
on through the years, as it has always been a labor of lov e. Howev er,
with the onset of the pandemic and the corresponding financial
disruption for Mr. Lyles, the classes are no longer financially tenable
without external funding.
Quilting classes will be held on a weekly basis in CEF Chapel Hill’s
office space at 208 N Columbia St, Ste 100, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
CEF will adv ertise courses to the community in its office and on
social media.
DocuSign Envelope ID: 69D5F63C-AD86-4541-AA21-CAB202F306A8
