0079200.4 – JOINT SEALANTS

Project Manual for Motor Pool Main Building Roof Replacement
Orange County, Hillsborough, NC
Prepared by Atlas Engineering, Inc., 551-A Pylon Drive – Raleigh, NC 27606
August 2021
3.02 INSTALLATION OF SEALANT

A. Masking: Thoroughly and completely mask all joints where the appearance of primer or sealant
on adjacent surfaces would be objectionable. Do not apply primer to exposed finish surfaces.

B. Apply primer to joints in accordance with sealant manufacturer’s instructions. Do not apply
primer to exposed finish surfaces. Primer application will be required whether or not required by
the manufacturer. Primer use will only be waived if specifically recommended against, in writing
for this specific project condition, by the manufacturer. Apply primer in a thin, uniform film.
Avoid build-up of film.

C. Allow primer drying time prior to applying sealant. Sealant must be applied same day as primer.

D. Backing Materials: Install backing materials into the joints to provide proper joint depth to width
ratio and to prevent three-sided adhesion. Select backer rod diameter to allow for proper fit
without shifting or tearing/deforming of the material. Do not puncture, twist, or braid the backer
rod material during installation. If proper joint depth is not available with backer rod use, utilize
bond breaker tape.

E. Apply sealant under pressure with hand or power-actuated gun or other appropriate means. Guns
shall have nozzle of proper size and shall provide sufficient pressure to completely fill joints as
designed.

F. Install the sealant in strict accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations as approved by the
Designer, thoroughly filling all joints to the recommended depth.

G. No air voids/bubbles shall be present within the cross-section of the joint. To ensure complete joint
fill, tooling shall be performed within ten to fifteen minutes of sealant application (prior to skinning).
Sealant shall be tooled with light pressure to spread the material against the sides of the joint and
provide a profile to match existing. Do not smear sealant onto surrounding surface of the
window/louver frames.

H. Sealant shall be dry tooled unless specifically approved otherwise by the manufacturer and the
Designer. If the sealant manufacturer approves, the tool may be dampened with a sealant
manufacturer approved reducer. Water or soapy water shall not be used on the tool.

3.03 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. The installer shall perform adhesion and cohesion testing on sample sealant joint locations once
cured to ensure that cleaning, priming, and sealant installation was performed adequately. If the
Designer is not present at the testing, provide a written confirmation of acceptance by the
Manufacturer for their warranty.

DocuSign Envelope ID: 9514E4EC-C3C9-4752-8A7F-22E83B22BB8E
