073113.7 – ASPHALT SHINGLED ROOF SYSTEM

Project Manual for Motor Pool Main Building Roof Replacement
Orange County, Hillsborough, NC
Prepared by Atlas Engineering, Inc., 551-A Pylon Drive – Raleigh, NC 27606
August 2021

3.03 UNDERLAYMENT INSTALLATION

A. Install one layer of self-adhering underlayment perpendicular to slope of roof at the eaves(parallel
to the eaves), and lap a minimum of 6" at end laps. The underlayment should extend a minimum
of 30" onto the roof surface. Also install self-adhered underlayment along rake edges, ridges,
penetrations, and transitions where indicated on the detail drawings. Turn down perimeter and
underlayment to cover exterior face of wood blocking. Press down all laps with a roller to assure
immediate adhesion. Install one layer along ridge and roof penetrations, in accordance with the
drawings.

B. Install synthetic underlayment over the remainder of the roof overlapping the self-adhered
underlayment a minimum of 6". Underlayment should be installed flush over the roof deck
without wrinkles, gaps, or buckles. Although it is preferred that only roof that can be shingled in
a day is removed, in the event that the underlayment is exposed overnight, moisture from dew
should be allowed to completely dry before shingle installation.

C. Cracked, wrinkled, torn, or otherwise damaged underlayment (both self-adhering and synthetic)
will not be accepted and will require removal and replacement. In no event will underlayment be
allowed to remain exposed to UV for more than 21 days. Prior to roofing over the underlayment,
inspect for damage and replace or recover any worn or torn areas.

D. Take special care if applying self-adhering waterproof underlayment when ambient or wind chill
temperature is below 45 °F (7 °C). Fasten/tack the underlayment in place and seal laps with a
heat gun or a polymer-modified cement if immediate adhesion to the deck does not occur. If
fastened, use hand-driven roofing nails, staples and pneumatic nailing will not be accepted.

3.04 SHINGLE INSTALLATION

A. Measure and chalk vertical and horizontal lines to layout the shingle installation and maintain
even spacings and consistent exposures. Watch for irregularities in the existing roof deck that
may require repair or replacement of deck prior to shingle installation to prevent irregularity from
showing through the shingled system.

B. Install shingles in accordance with manufacturer's instructions for product type and application
specified and the detail drawings.

C. Fasten each full and trimmed shingle with a minimum of 6 nails at proper locations on shingle at
locations recommended by the manufacturer. Fasteners must be hand-driven straight, with nail
heads flush with the shingle surface and never cutting into the shingle. Use of staples and
pneumatic nailers are not accepted.

D. Begin shingle installation with the manufacturer recommended starter course at the eave. The
starter strip should overhang the eave a minimum of 1/2" where a drip edge is not provided.

E. Install following full course to fully cover the starter course. Properly stagger and align the
succeeding shingle courses working up the roof from the eave as recommended by the
DocuSign Envelope ID: 9514E4EC-C3C9-4752-8A7F-22E83B22BB8E
