Preliminary Perspectives of Individual BEAG Members 154
1) At this time, what would you propose as the total Number of Seats on the
Orange County Board of Commissioners?
DISTRICT 1
Kathy Arab— Either(a) six:three seats each for the two current districts, or(b) seven: only if we expand
the number of districts to seven, or(c)five: only if we expand the number of districts to
five.
Jennifer Bremer—7, although 5 would also be ok.
Jaaz Catterall—7
Lisa Hazirjian—7 or 9
Krishna Mondal—I propose seven as the total number of seats.
Jonathan Weiler-7
DISTRICT 2
Martha Jenkins—7
Patrick Mulkey-7
Alicia Reid—9
1 would propose to increase the Number of Seats on the Orange County Board of
Commissioners. It would effectively ensure all areas of the counties are exposed by
increasing the Number of Seats.
Jenn Sykes—7 is fine
2) Based on the number of seats noted in #1 above, how many would be At-
Large?
DISTRICT 1
Kathy Arab—Zero
Jennifer Bremer—Either 2 as at present, one from each part of the county, or none. I was persuaded by
the argument that just having one would essentially give Chapel Hill an additional
commissioner. Perhaps these should be residence districts (DAL), rather than pure at-
large seats, with one from Chapel Hill/Carrboro and one from the rest of the county.
Pitt has a two-level system sort of like that. I'm indifferent as to whether the
nomination by sub-region should continue or not.
Jaaz Catterall—0-1. While I'm not personally thrilled by the idea of at-large members, I would be open
to considering one if public opinion ends up being largely in favor of having a say in
electing both a member from their own district and a member for the county at large.
This openness would be muted if the geographic distribution of favorability is skewed so
that people in less populous areas preferred not to have any at-large seats.
Lisa Hazirjian—See next response (#3 below)
Krishna Mondal— None
Jonathan Weiler-4
DISTRICT 2
Martha Jenkins—0
Patrick Mulkey-0
Alicia Reid—2
Jenn Sykes—None
