ATI’s Newcomers Program serv es more than 350 refugee and
immigrant children and adults from more than 30 countries
worldwide. Through this program, newcomers are prov ided
accessible, art-based mental health serv ices across the Triangle and
Triad regions of North Carolina. In addition to serv ing newcomer
children in the school systems, ATI also offers art therapy to adults
through the Carrboro Community Health Center, monthly women’s
groups and through groups offered by Church W orld Serv ices in
Durham. Newcomers present with a unique set of mental health
concerns. Beyond the potential - and probable - trauma experienced
before and during migration to the United States, newcomers also
contend with difficulties experienced post-arriv al, including language
and cultural barriers, financial concerns, ongoing legal battles,
homesickness, ethnic discrimination, and other barriers to housing,
employment, and education. ATI’s Newcomers Program helps clients
express and process this complex trauma, build confidence lev els,
learn social skills, and acquire acculturation practices.
ATI’s Arts and Peer Support Group is a free, weekly Carrboro based
group serv ing adults liv ing with sev ere and persistent mental illness.
Using the expressiv e arts, group members learn to celebrate
themselv es as artists and integral community members rather than
as stigmatized people, continually challenging the stigma that shapes
our public conv ersation about mental illness.
ATI also collaborates with other agencies in the area.
ATI clients range in age from 3-100 years, the majority (78%) of which
are ages 3-24. ATI clients come from ov er 30 countries. ATI works
with Asian/Pacific Islanders (20%), Black/African Americans (17%),
Hispanic Latinix people (29%), W hite/Caucasians (20%) as well as
refugees and immigrants identifying from other backgrounds (14%).
ATI clientele are ev enly div ided between male and female-identifying
clients, with sev eral clients identifying as transgender or
genderqueer/gender non-binary. Eighty percent of ATI’s clients are
considered low income or liv e at or below the pov erty line.
DocuSign Envelope ID: 3B7987D4-AE68-4972-853F-8188A0E8440B
