Please explain how
your general
livelihood has been
impacted by COVID-
19.
COVID impact has been beyond monumental for me both
professionally and personally. For more than 40 years I hav e been a
full time artist and educator, making 100% of my income from a mix
of music projects, performances, touring, playing for dance classes,
teaching adults and also work as a teaching artist in schools; doing
residencies, workshops and assemblies. My work in schools has
been the anchor income that pays bills and helps support other
creativ e projects and professional dev elopment. It is an important
way I contribute to build a better world through children. My entire
identity, lifestyle, social interactions, community, passion, life mission
and income is built around the work I do as an artist.
I was completely booked from mid- March through May and 100% of
my work was and continues to be cancelled. My approximate lost
income from mid -March through August is $11,795, for the jobs that
were contracted and confirmed. I am happy to offer a PDF with a
detailed summery of specifics- cancelled gigs and lost income. The
lost work includes many school residencies and assemblies in W ake
Co.-United Arts schools- Farrmington W oods Elem, Fox Rd., Fuller,
McGees Crossroads, Highcroft, Olds, W ake Forest E, Apex
Friendship, and in Durham Co. DAC-CAPS- Creekside E , Sandy
Ridge E. It also includes multiple concerts with bands- La Fiesta Latin
Jazz Qunitet- Artsplosure, Koka Booth , Juan Alamo and Marimjazzia
-Sharp Nine and Mahalo jazz in Saxapawhaw. It includes lost income
from Duke dance for a week of canceled classes and spring concert.
It also includes income from teaching adults at the Kumandi African
Durham camp as well as a shekere class series at Liv ing Arts in
Durham and music classes from my homeā¦. and more. The total
music income I hav e receiv ed since mid March is $1407, thanks to
partial payment from United Arts Council, a v irtual camp class and
two facebook jazz concerts.
I am striv ing to dev elop creativ e v irtual offerings for children and
adults. Howev er, the transformational, interactiv e energy of liv e
performance and drumming for all ages in schools and community
does not translate easily online. I am not sure what the future holds
or how to make a liv ing in my art form.
Have you applied for
unemployment
benefits?
No
DocuSign Envelope ID: 792A32A0-430F-4F31-B6D6-40984809BF7C
