5 <br /> 1 Department, and Paul has led with integrity, compassion, professionalism and commitment to <br /> 2 his staff, County Management, County Board and department colleagues; and <br /> 3 <br /> 4 WHEREAS, Paul's devotion to the government finance profession is matched by his love for his <br /> 5 alma mater UNC-Chapel Hill, especially the Tar Heel basketball and football teams; <br /> 6 <br /> 7 NOW THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize and <br /> 8 express deep appreciation and respect for the services rendered by Paul Laughton to the <br /> 9 Orange County community, and wish him well in his retirement. <br /> 10 <br /> 11 This the 15th day of June, 2021. <br /> 12 <br /> 13 <br /> 14 Renee Price, Chair <br /> 15 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 16 <br /> 17 A motion was made by Commissioner Bedford, seconded by Commissioner Dorosin, to <br /> 18 approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 19 <br /> 20 Roll call ensued <br /> 21 <br /> 22 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 23 <br /> 24 Chair Price thanked Paul Laughton for all of his work. She said he always made finance <br /> 25 sound easy, and has been there in a calm cool manner to help. She said he will be missed, and <br /> 26 wished him well-deserved relaxation. <br /> 27 Commissioner McKee said he is grateful for all the help Paul Laughton has provided. <br /> 28 Commissioner Dorosin said it has been a pleasure to work with Paul Laughton, and how <br /> 29 he maintained humor and optimism. He said he is grateful for his patience and thoughtfulness <br /> 30 and for taking the Board's ideas and making it work in the budget. <br /> 31 Commissioner Bedford said Paul Laughton has been helpful during her years as a <br /> 32 Commissioner, but said she also worked with him when she was a school board member and <br /> 33 with the collaboration team. She said she could always go to him for information and <br /> 34 assistance. She said she appreciates his patience despite the Board asking him the same <br /> 35 questions year after year. She wished him the best in his retirement. <br /> 36 Gary Donaldson, Chief Finance Officer said he thinks of integrity, professionalism, hard <br /> 37 work, and a commitment to excellence when he reflects on working with Paul Laughton. He <br /> 38 said Paul has been a trusted advisor, and has worked through two difficult fiscal years through <br /> 39 the recession, and he can always count on him. He said he has been able to get to know Paul <br /> 40 Laughton personally, and will miss him as a colleague and a friend. He said Paul Laughton <br /> 41 deserves all the best. <br /> 42 Paul Laughton said he is humbled by the kind words. He said, in almost 22 years of <br /> 43 working in Orange County as a public servant, he had great mentors and coworkers and feels <br /> 44 very fortunate to have had them to guide him in this journey. He said it has been a pleasure to <br /> 45 work for Orange County, and it has given him great opportunities and great people to work with. <br /> 46 He thanked the BOCC for all it does in leading the County and the work it puts in even outside <br /> 47 of meetings. He thanked senior management, including the County Manager and Deputy <br /> 48 County Manager. He said he has worked with Greg Wilder, Assistant to the County Manager <br /> 49 for Legislative Affairs, almost his whole time with the County and it has been a pleasure to work <br /> 50 with him, as well as Bonnie Hammersley, Travis Myren, and Gary Donaldson over the past <br />
