She said she wants to stabilize neighborhoods.
Commissioner Dorosin said he was going to propose a similar alternative. He said he
wants to set aside some money, but he wants to spend time setting up the program. He said it
needs to be more than an AMI level, such as how long has someone lived in the house, the
burden of the taxes, etc.
Commissioner Greene said she spoke with the Executive Director at the Marian Cheek
Jackson Center, where there is a small program to give tax relief. She said this program has
certain criteria, which she explained (age, tax burden — 10% or greater, length of time in home,
80% AMI, etc.). She said there are other programs to investigate, and this deserves study in
the fall. She said the Cheek Jackson center has about $45,000 for this year in the private fund
for tax relief. She said the Executive Director suggested allocating $25,000 to the Jackson
Center to cover the 53% increase in property values for this year. She said the County Attorney
said that was possible. She proposed setting aside $25,000 from Social Justice Fund for
allocation in the fall to the Jackson Center to support tax relief.
