She said if these funds are not available, she will recommend that the position be
funded through Article 46 funds.
Commissioner McKee asked what part of Article 46 funds will be used.
Bonnie Hammersley said it would be from the personnel budget of Article 46.
Commissioner Greene said the strategy for future funding is smart, and it is an
appropriate use of both ARPA and Article 46 funds.
Chair Price agreed, and said it is a good use of ARPA and Article 46 funds.
Commissioner Fowler asked if the Economic Development Department does anything
similar to what this position will do.
Travis Myren said this is direct technical assistance, which the department does not
currently provide.
Chair Price said the extent of the County's assistant currently is to help with applications,
but no hands on assistance.
Commissioner Hamilton said she wanted to know exactly how this would not duplicate
existing small business supports, including the Chamber of Commerce and non-profits. She
said she wanted to remind people that there are a lot of needs in the County, and if the BOCC
does not use the funds for this purpose, there are other economic development needs, including
school needs. She feels we could use the money elsewhere.
Commissioner Bedford said the President of Durham Technical Community College, JB
Buxton, sent an email that hours in this position have been increased at the Durham campus.
She said she is pleased that the County supports LAUNCH, PFAP for food economy etc. She
