10
1 being assigned to schools. He said this reduction is consistent with conversations held last
2 summer, and looking at how policing is done in Orange County.
3 Commissioner McKee asked what criteria was used to identify which departments, like
4 the Sheriff's Office, would not have to comply with the reduction.
5 Bonnie Hammersley said social safety net departments were not required to cut. She
6 also said the Sheriff is an elected official, and she usually leaves it up to other elected officials
7 to make decisions on that budget.
8 Commissioner Bedford explained her amendment. She said her concern for funding for
9 the Piedmont Wildlife after school program is that students are already served by after school
10 programs at their schools, and instead of extra options for some students, she would like to
11 focus efforts for those who do not have any options at all, when prioritizing the ARPA funds.
12 She said the Board has talked about moving the focus to the earlier preschool years, and this is
13 going in the other direction and opens floodgates for other schools to request extra funding.
14 She said department requests do illustrate the need for ARPA dollars for the basics, and even
15 though it is only $9,000, every dollar should be used for emergency funding.
16 Commissioner Dorosin said the schools mentioned by the program serve the highest
17 number of non-white students, particularly Stanback and New Hope, which primarily serve
18 Latinx students. He said there may be a need for more resources in these schools. He said
19 some schools have a high percentage of low wealth students and need additional resources.
20 Chair Price added that not all children have access to, or want to be part of, the existing
21 after school programs at schools. She said if there is an audience in those schools for further
22 enrichment that they would not normally get, she is in favor of more options. She recalled the
23 Commissioners previously reached a general consensus that since the outside agencies went
24 through a vetting process, Commissioners would take the recommendation as is from the
25 County Manager.
26
27 Slide #17
RAN GE COU NTS'F'2X021- B UD ET
.5rtirtlrtmlj sp— S n—t—ni An.0 rtMorrS 4arral PUM LEbr r1.d Otte
p
T.4.1 r.4.1
Pvm
I 1 6Ff1h Qe
?1.720P-0{4 C_F'oic6ik_c'- Fes,. f i.xa rhi County. i (ii5p:M.WI
Dwaein LyGpVMlrnGnia Lemulhuiion wing Chapwi 4]i IG.D3l
I W Llhrmg4 rhrt Gama
p manupp.M dhmFY
272142 LIbrar5,mh's
M
hudgbr 1..gduaeo',moma
is ihd FY NG3i-d2 Haw
21.7211P-0Ui Ccrtiey'ssim Eduateca u xJ,4d4A{9 aC the A—e.lrx.S (515G_725,u71 SA.9G],pOUA ARPA
R.nihcm 10eacua Olen ACA IARP,6I ].DGD_G 7.Da d
lvndt Ie hedir.ldod by ADW
hehwee CHCIC$end0CS Ia
®up"M MPM-W wwo.
emellanel.a dmenlelheaw
lar whnalagy la aneum
:NIM Ik'mA xlatr—g.
ndlar Aw pmrnlmlhle*"s
Thal pnc—c2e Ovde*'kwning
and as m lho appvounity
gep
ORANGE COUNTY
11Y RT7 I a_AROLIN,t
28
