4 <br /> 1 Fred Stipe said he appreciates Kirby Saunders' partnership. He said on behalf of the <br /> 2 rescue squad and the board of directors, he thanked the Commissioners for their support. He <br /> 3 said the technical rescue team is getting prepared for possible deployment during hurricane <br /> 4 season. He said it is an honor to work with a great team of emergency responders in Orange <br /> 5 County, including 911, fire services, and the Sheriff's department. He said he is very proud of <br /> 6 the partnership, and extremely proud of the 501h anniversary. He said the rescue squad will <br /> 7 have a celebration in 2022, and the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will be invited. <br /> 8 Commissioner McKee read the proclamation: <br /> 9 <br /> 10 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 11 PROCLAMATION <br /> 12 South Orange Rescue Squad Day—June 11, 2021 <br /> 13 <br /> 14 WHEREAS, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a vital public service; and <br /> 15 <br /> 16 WHEREAS, Technical Rescue, including high-angle, swiftwater, and land search are vital public <br /> 17 services; and <br /> 18 <br /> 19 WHEREAS, CPR and Community Education are vital public services, and <br /> 20 <br /> 21 WHEREAS, South Orange Rescue Squad is made up entirely of volunteers who provide these <br /> 22 vital public services to the residents of Orange County with no compensation to themselves; and <br /> 23 <br /> 24 WHEREAS, before the founding of South Orange Rescue Squad, transportation from southern <br /> 25 Orange County to a hospital was provided by the Chapel Hill Funeral Home; and <br /> 26 <br /> 27 WHEREAS, members of the Carrboro Fire Department and residents of Carrboro and Chapel <br /> 28 Hill joined together to form the South Orange Rescue Squad in 1971; and <br /> 29 <br /> 30 WHEREAS, the people of Chapel Hill and Carrboro donated the money to build South Orange <br /> 31 Rescue Squad's station which was completed in 1974; and <br /> 32 <br /> 33 WHEREAS, the volunteers of South Orange Rescue Squad have been serving the Orange <br /> 34 County public and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by providing EMS since the <br /> 35 first week of June 1971; and <br /> 36 <br /> 37 WHEREAS, the volunteers of South Orange Rescue Squad began providing rescue services to <br /> 38 the residents of Orange County and surrounding areas in 1991 and technical rescue services in <br /> 39 1992; and <br /> 40 <br /> 41 WHEREAS, South Orange Rescue Squad has trained more than two thousand volunteers over <br /> 42 the past 50 years, many of whom have dedicated their careers to public safety and providing <br /> 43 medical care to the residents of North Carolina; and <br /> 44 <br /> 45 WHEREAS, since 1971 the volunteers of South Orange Rescue Squad have engaged in <br /> 46 countless hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their life-saving <br /> 47 skills; and <br /> 48 <br /> 49 WHEREAS, since 2006 South Orange Rescue Squad has trained more than 10,000 Orange <br /> 50 County residents by providing free CPR classes; and <br /> 51 <br />
