<br />July 3, 1961
<br />The Orange County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday, July 3, 1961, at ten o'clock a.m.
<br />in the Commissioners room at the courthouse in Hillsboro, N. C.
<br />Members present: Chairman Donald Stanford, Commissioners Harvey Bennett, Clarence D. Jones,
<br />Donald McDade and Henry Walker.
<br />Members absent: None
<br />The minutes of the previous meetings were read by the Clerk and approved after corrections
<br />were made in the June 5th, June 22nd, and June 27th minutes,
<br />Hugh Wilson of Bingham Township presented the necessary bond and was administered the oath
<br />of Constable by Chairman Stanford. The Bond will be recorded in Bond Book 2 on file in the
<br />Register of Deeds office.
<br />The following road petitions were presented and the Clerk was requested to mail same to the
<br />State Highway Commission in Greensboro, N. C.
<br />1. Linden Road in Eno Township
<br />2. Brigadoon, McDermott and Renfrew Drives and Dundee Way located in the Brigadoon
<br />Subdivision of the Eno Development Corporation, Eno Township.
<br />The following Department Officials presented reports for the month of June, 1961.
<br />Jessie Trowbridge, Home Demonstration Agent Walter Wrenn, Veterans Service Officer
<br />Frank Frederick, Delinquent Tax Collector and Mrs. Frances K. Miscall, Acting
<br />Cashe Boggs, County Dog Warden Welfare Supt,
<br />E. M. Lynch, Clerk of Court
<br />Jimmy Beare and Allen Brandon of the Carrboro community were present to discuss with the Board
<br />their opinions concerning certain action that was slated to come before the Chapel Hill City
<br />Administrative School Board at their next meeting. These men requested that the Commissioners
<br />attend this meeting, not as a Board of Commissioners but as interested citizens.
<br />A discussion arose concerning the appointment of a new Solicitor and the results that Orange
<br />County might derive from the dividing of the solicitorial district.
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner Jones, seconded by Commissioner Bennett, and unanimously adopted,
<br />it was agreed that Orange County would underwrite the expense of retaining the position of Assistant
<br />Solicitor for the period of one (1) year. The Clerk was requested to inform Ike Andrews, the newly
<br />appointed Solicitor, of the Board's decision.
<br />A letter dated June 29, 1961, from Raymond E. Strong, a resident of Colonial Heights, was read
<br />by Chairman Stanford. Mr. Strong suggested that a 35-mile speed limit be imposed on the Airport
<br />Road from an area beyond the Reach House Restaurant to beyond the entrance of the Bates Hill Road,
<br />that also suggested that a caution light be installed at the entrance to the Colonial Heights area.
<br />The Board felt that Mr. Stang's requests were justified and the Clerk was requested to mail Mr.
<br />Strong's letter along with a-letter of recommendation from the Board to the State Highway Commission
<br />in Greensboro, N. C.
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner Bennett, seconded by Commissioner Walker, and unanimously adopted,
<br />it was moved that as of July 1, 1961, all elected county officials shall be covered by the provisions
<br />of the North Carolina Workmen's Compensation Act.
<br />A discussion of the 1961-1962 budget ensued.
<br />The following names were drawn to serve as jurors for the August 7th term of Criminal Court.
