ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: November 5, 2003 <br />Action Age a <br />Item No. - - <br />SUBJECT: Public Art Selection Committees for the Homestead Park Aquatics Center and <br />Southern Community Park <br />DEPARTMENT: Arts Commission PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Percent for Art Projects at Homestead <br />Park Aquatics Center and Southern <br />Community Park <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Martha Shannon, ext. 2335 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough <br />Chapel Hill <br />Durham <br />Mebane <br />732-8181 <br />968-4501 <br />688-7331 <br />336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To appoint representatives from the BOCC to serve on the public art selection <br />committees for the Homestead Park Aquatics Center and Southern Community Park projects. <br />These public art selection committees are separate and distinct from the Project Planning <br />Committee for the Southern Community Park and the Aquatics Center. <br />BACKGROUND: On October 1, 2003, the BOCC unanimously approved Orange County's <br />plans to designate 1 % of the funds allocated for Southern Community Park and the Homestead <br />Aquatics Center for public art and also authorized the Orange County Arts Commission to work <br />collaboratively with the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission on the public art aspects of these <br />two projects funded jointly by Orange County and the Town of Chapel Hill. <br />As requested by Chair Margaret Brown and Commissioner Barry Jacobs at the September 16, <br />2003 meeting of the Project Planning Committee for the Southern Community Park and the <br />Aquatics Center, representatives from both the Orange County Arts Commission and the <br />Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission met to develop the attached guidelines and timeline for <br />collaborating on these two projects. According to these guidelines, representatives from the <br />BOCC would participate on the public art selection sub-committees for these two projects. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There would be no additional impact to the budget. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends selection of representatives from the <br />BOCC to serve on the public art selection committees on these two projects. <br />
