SECTION 316613 – HELICAL PIERS
Orange County Waste and Recycling For Proposal – Not for Construction
Metal and White Goods Retaining Wall Repair 31 66 13 - 3
DAA PN R00592-204ST2 November 2020
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A.Installation Procedures
1.The helical pier shall be positioned as shown on the project drawings.
Proper angular alignment shall be established at the start of the installa-
tion.
2.Helical pier shall be installed in a smooth, continuous manner. The rate of
pier rotation shall be in the range of 5 to 20 revolutions per minute.
3.Sufficient down pressure shall be applied to advance the pier.
4.Extension material may be required to position the pier to the depth re-
quired. Extensions shall be coupled to the helical pier by using high
strength bolts, installed and tightened to approximately 40 ft-lbs of torque.
5.If underground obstructions are encountered during installation, the Dealer
shall have the option of removing the obstruction if possible or relocating
the helical pier. This latter option may require the relocation of adjacent
piers.
B. Termination of Installation
1.Helical piers shall be installed to the minimum torque value corresponding
to the load capacity indicated for each pier.
2.Maximum installation torque shall at no time exceed the torque rating of
the helical pier shaft specified for the project.
3.Minimum depth of installation shall be as indicated on the drawings pro-
vided the top helix is located at least 5 feet below the surface.
4.Pier installation shall be terminated provided the minimum installation
torque and minimum depth requirements have been satisfied.
5.If the minimum torque requirement has not been satisfied at the minimum
depth level, the Dealer shall have the following options:
i.Install the pier deeper using additional extensions until the specified
torque level is obtained.
ii.Remove the existing pier and install a pier with larger and/or more
helices. This revised pier shall be installed at least 3 feet beyond
the termination depth of the original pier.
iii.Add additional piers.
6.If the maximum torque rating of the pier and/or the installing equipment
has been reached before reaching the minimum required depth, the Deal-
er shall have the following options.
i.Terminate the installation at the depth obtained
ii.Remove the existing pier and install a pier with smaller and/or fewer
helices. The revised pier shall be installed at least 3 feet beyond
the termination depth of the original pier.
DocuSign Envelope ID: B2D44CC3-6321-4EF3-AFC6-547186A1261E
