To qualify for the progrem, cities or muntlee (both c81ee antl counties may be <br />members) must 1) contluct a loml emisalona enalyeia antl inventory of community and <br />municipal GHG sources; 2) atlopt en emissions reduction target 3)tlmft an action plan to <br />achieve [he target; antl 4) carry out implementation and monilodng. Tha ICLEI provides <br />support in [he form of technical ass lance, annual ireining workehopa, publications, compe[Bive <br />grants, antl access to a natwodc of partlclpaPmg local governments. <br />The neetl for emissions retluction is shong in We Triangle, wM1ich ranks among the nation's 25 <br />most ozone-pollutetl regions. On a relatetl cote, Triangle J Council of Governments qualified <br />the Triangle region for the ILS. DeperimeM m Energys Clean Cties Progrem in November <br />2000, a voluntary, locally basetl Inttiative to expand the use of alternative foal vehicles. <br />TM1ese programs are tlesignetl tc be complementary in helping protect the environment, and era <br />also consieleM wM the BoaM's proposetl Air Quality goal, which inductee objectives relatedb <br />examining emissions In the County vehicle fleet, pursuing arM promoting altema[ive-fuel <br />vehicles, and retlucing emissions Countywitle.
