Asbestos Abatement Guidelines and Policies <br />Page 01560-3 <br />SECTION 01560 <br /> <br />WORKER PROTECTION <br /> <br />1.01 GENERAL <br /> <br />A. Provide worker protection as required by OSHA, state, and local standards applicable to <br />the work. Contractor is solely responsible for enforcing worker protection requirements <br />at least equal to those specified in this Section. <br /> <br />B. Each time the work area is entered the contractor shall require all persons to remove all <br />street clothes in the changing room of the personnel decontamination unit and put-on <br />new disposable coverall, new head cover, and a clean respirator. Proceed through shower <br />room to equipment room and put-on work boots. <br /> <br />C. Workers shall not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum or chew tobacco in the work area, the <br />equipment room, the load out area, or the clean room. <br /> <br />1.02 WORKER TRAINING <br /> <br />A. Train all workers in accordance with 29 CFR 1926 and North Carolina state regulations <br />regarding the dangers inherent in handling asbestos, breathing asbestos dust, proper <br />work procedures and personal and area protective measures. <br /> <br />1.03 MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS <br /> <br />A. Provide medical examinations for all workers. Examination shall as a minimum, meet <br />OSHA requirements as set forth in 29 CFR 1926 and N.C. Workmen’s Compensation Act <br />Dusty Trades Examination Record (DEHNR Form 2796). <br /> <br />1.04 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING <br /> <br />A. Provide disposable full-body coveralls and disposable head covers and require that they <br />be worn by all workers in the work area. Provide enough for all required changes, for all <br />workers in the work area. <br /> <br />B. Boots: Provide work boots with non-skid soles and, where required by OSHA, foot <br />protection for all workers. <br /> <br />C. Gloves: Provide work gloves to all workers and require that they be worn at the <br />appropriate times. Do not remove gloves from work area.
