The Museum’s permanent collection consists of more than 19,000 works of art, featuring North Carolina’s premier collections of Asian art and works of art on paper, as well as significant collections of European masterworks, twentieth-century and contemporary art, and North Carolina pottery. In addition to permanent collection galleries, the Ackland organizes four major special exhibitions a year. Spanning all cultures and time periods, our collection strategies and special exhibitions work to showcase the breadth and depth of human creativ ity. The Ackland is a v ital teaching resource that puts the art of understanding at the heart of what we do. Using our collection and object-based learning, we empower our audience to get close to art— the familiar, the unexpected, the challenging—and connect with the complexity and beauty of the wider world. In 2018, 22,000 of the Ackland’s annual v isitors came to the Museum to participate in a range of educational and public programs for univ ersity, K-12, and community audiences. In addition to the Ackland’s exhibition and education programs, the Museum works to acquire, research, publish, and preserv e the works of art in our collection. The Ackland also has a growing membership community, and offers informal learning opportunities through an ongoing and robust public program schedule for members and non- members alike. The Ackland not only encourages close looking, but also activ e participation. The combination of our v ersatile collection, accessible interpretation materials, and v ariety of programs allow us to offer engaging experiences for all our v isitors. In recognition of our commitment to being accessible to all, the Ackland permanently re-opened ART& in September 2018. A dedicated museum space for students and community to connect with each other and create and experience art, ART& hosts artist talks, performances, art-making classes, and much more. In addition to serv ing as a v ibrant community and program space, ART& features site-specific commissions by contemporary artists. Ackland Director Katie Ziglar joined the Museum in July 2016, and leads a staff of 23 full-time Museum employees and one part-time employee in four departments, including administration, curatorial, external affairs, and academic programs. This year the Ackland will expand by four additional staff members. The Ackland’s National Adv isory Board (NAB) consists of 26 members and supports the adv ancement of the Museum and its mission. NAB members work closely with the Director and staff to enhance all aspects of Ackland’s programing including but not limited to: enriching and caring for its collections; creating and presenting original research and exhibitions; educating students and the public; and expanding the Museum’s national and international profile.
