Artist Experience Arshia and I are founders of the Redbud W riting Project, an adult- <br />education creativ e writing organization based in the Triangle. <br />Although we are applying for this grant as artists, not as <br />representativ es of Redbud, I would like to share our experience at <br />Redbud as an indicator of our past success in running similar arts <br />projects. In May of this year, Arshia taught a free online course <br />through the Durham Public Library system; through the course, she <br />reached and instructed eight students who would not hav e otherwise <br />had the resources to pursue creativ e writing instruction. In addition, <br />Arshia and I hav e worked to include marginalized students in our <br />regular Redbud courses by fundraising for scholarships. W e hav e <br />seen remarkable outcomes for these scholarship-receiv ing students: <br />an incredible improv ement in their writing skills, serious amounts of <br />work done on worthwhile nov els and memoir projects. One of these <br />students, Leslie, said: “In taking the Fiction 1 writing class, I hav e <br />learned the foundation of building a story, what the core elements of <br />a story are and receiv ed inv aluable time workshopping my <br />submissions with both peers and an experienced professor. I am so <br />happy to now be on my way towards my dreams, especially since, <br />without this scholarship, I nev er would hav e been able to do so.” <br />W e are excited at the prospect of reaching eight other students like <br />Leslie through this project. <br />PROJECT/PROGRAM <br />BUDGET <br />Please fill out the charts below with your project's expenses and <br />income.
