How will you <br />evaluate whether or <br />not your goals have <br />been met? <br />The demise of the mov ie theater business has been predicted in the <br />media for years. Some suggest that ev en post-pandemic, people will <br />be reluctant to leav e their homes and will be utterly content with the <br />v ariety (or glut) of streaming content. But my mailbox tells me <br />differently. Since March, hundreds of people hav e donated funds and <br />sent me notes telling how much they lov e and miss the Chelsea and <br />can’t wait to return. W e’v e raised a lot of money for renov ations (with <br />more to be raised) --these are not people who are planning on staying <br />home and watching mov ies on their telev isions. As has been the <br />case for years, people like to do both. Much of the media “hype” has <br />circled around Hollywood. But the Chelsea’s existence is not based <br />on the latest new release and NY Times rev iew. Although these hav e <br />definitely been and will remain our bread and butter, the Chelsea’s <br />commitment to community is based on partnerships and outreach <br />and to prov iding a great and enriching, ev en transformativ e <br />experience. <br />The Chelsea goals are not based solely on quantitativ e <br />accomplishments, but are equally qualitativ e: How to prov ide a more <br />impactful film experience (physical comfort, artistic/cinematic quality, <br />educational purpose, and community/customer serv ice). If these <br />functions are not met, we will hav e failed in fully reaching our goals. <br />1. Physical comfort: The renov ations will prov ide greater comfort in <br />the theaters: seating, acoustics, lighting, sound, env ironmental <br />controls, and amenities. (W e are not trying to expand any food <br />serv ice!). W e will monitor response to the renov ations. <br />2. Artistic/cinematic quality: This will be ongoing as we broaden and <br />div ersity our audiences. W e hav e found that many of our offerings <br />are either fairly unique to the Chelsea and/or best offered with <br />college/univ ersity partnerships. W e will ev aluate the extent to which <br />we can expand these and additionally include historically and <br />contemporary significant work ov er the next year. By nature, these <br />projects ev olv e ov er more than a year. <br />3. Educational purpose: Upon reopening, or when learning that large <br />attendance lev els are feasible, we will relaunch Monday programs but <br />will meanwhile attempt to hold alternativ e Zoom or similar programs. <br />Limitations on audience sizes may make this a slower process. <br />4. Community/customer serv ice: it is imperativ e that upon reopening <br />our customers hav e utmost confidence in the Chelsea and staff <br />training will take place prior to reopening.
