Through this journey, I hav e come to see trees as presence and to <br />appreciate the stewards of nature for preserv ing the gifts that trees <br />offer, planting seedlings, protecting grov es and conv eying the <br />stories in which these liv ing beings figure as backdrop or presence. <br />My own stewardship is also about planting and re-planting, a gifting <br />of images and archiv es, for sharing, creating and preserv ing <br />memories. <br />Community Impact Community Impact: <br />This exhibition including educational programs at the NC Botanical <br />Garden will serv e to heighten awareness of the significance of our <br />natural landscape and the human connectiv ity to our env ironment. <br />The mission of the Garden is “to inspire understanding, appreciation, <br />and conserv ation of plants and to adv ance a sustainable relationship <br />between people and nature.” I hav e come to understand how <br />supporting the health of our natural env ironment is beneficial in the <br />following ways: <br />*Public and social health, improv ing quality of life <br />*Env ironmental health, enhancing water quality, energy conserv ation, <br />and protection for wildlife <br />*Economic health, attraction for new residents, industry, and <br />commercial activ ity <br />Public Component: <br />Participants will hav e the opportunity to enjoy and deepen their <br />appreciation of our community’s trees, v iewing captiv ating portraits <br />of people and the trees they lov e, while listening, at the liv e <br />reception, to the music of a dynamic, acoustic duo, performed <br />v irtually and melded with projected imagery. <br />Participants: <br />Ev ents are free and open to the public. W e will target the community <br />supporting the NC Botanical garden’s mission, students and faculty <br />from UNC env ironmental science and related academic disciplines, <br />community gardeners and horticulture enthusiasts, artists, <br />photographers, writers, and music lov ers. <br />In addition to the speakers, tree walks, and educational discussion <br />groups, the portraits rev eal the subjects’ relationships to the natural <br />world and the trees that bring them joy and memories. <br />Included in this exhibition will be stories and thoughts from some of <br />the participants: <br />Denise’s Tree Hugs in the Summer of Cov id-19 <br />"I lost 3 family members to Cov id. I miss so much the hugs, this tree <br />grov e is hugging me." <br />Amy’s W oods, Sharing Time with Family <br />"Much of my childhood was spent outdoors exploring and playing.
