Primary Organization <br />Description <br />ISLA is an educational non-profit whose mission is to build <br />community and leadership through educational Spanish language <br />and cultural immersion programs. W e env ision an equitable society <br />strengthened by the power, knowledge, and v alue of Latin American <br />languages and cultures. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic we ran an <br />Saturday heritage language school, located at St. Thomas More in <br />Chapel-Hill primarily for low-income Latinx students. Using an <br />interdisciplinary approach that brought together the arts and <br />exploration of the natural world with language and culture we worked <br />to build a bridge between home and the classroom for our bi-cultural <br />students, as well as prov iding them with enriching learning <br />opportunities they might not otherwise hav e. Since the beginning of <br />the COVID-19 pandemic we hav e mov ed our serv ices and our social <br />enterprises online and reassessed the needs of the community we <br />serv e, piv oting to a dual format that includes shortened v irtual <br />Saturday heritage language classes and v irtual extracurricular <br />activ ities, including: Arts, Sciences and Physical Activ ities <br />throughout the week to keep students engaged, using their Spanish <br />language skills and connected to their community in a way that <br />supports their social and emotional dev elopment.
