Project/Program
Summary
ISLA's Activ idades Extra Escolares is a project to help engage
students beyond the basics during this school year. So much
emphasis has been made in the last few months on getting kids back
to learning the basics, despite the pandemic, but we hav e found that
our parents and students report that these basics are often
ov erwhelming for students and de-motiv ating when there isn't a
pairing with enjoyable outlets for students' creativ e energies! By
ensuring that 1/3 of our programming is focused specifically on the
arts and arts instruction we hope to prov ide a dev elopmentally and
culturally appropriate outlet in the students' home language of
Spanish to connect back to their joy for learning! W e know that the
arts can prov ide a v ital outlet for self-expression and we see our
students as needing that now more than ev er! They hav e so many
experiences and feelings that are difficult to express, in addition to
the boredom that comes to being stuck at home. W e are excited to
bring this program to students, with the support of the Orange
County Arts Commission, to help giv e students enriching
experiences from the safety of their homes. W e hav e piloted
numerous lessons and approaches this summer with our social
enterprise SEPA's online summer camp classes and we hope that
with a little extra financial support we will be able to bring this high
quality programming, free of charge, to our ISLA students as well!
Project Start Date
(no earlier than July
1, 2020)
October 1, 2020
Project End Date (no
later than June 30,
2021)
May 31, 2021
Project Goals In 2019, ISLA did a surv ey of the families who participate in our
heritage language programming and found that for ov er half of our
students ISLA's Saturday school was their only extracurricular
activ ity. This was not ov erly surprising to us because as educators
we know that far too often extracurricular activ ities like music, art and
sports are where we see deep opportunity gaps between racial/ethnic
minorities students and their non-minority peers. W hen the COVID-19
pandemic began we saw that our ISLA families became ev en more
isolated than the general community and we are launching this
project to attempt to allev iate the isolation and lack of opportunities
for student and family engagement, during this coming school year.
Specifically, we would like to see our students enjoying a positiv e
outlet for their creativ ity, exploring culturally relev ant themes through
artistic mediums and connecting with caring adult role models who
can help them cultiv ate social/emotional skills while teaching them
artistic fundamentals.
DocuSign Envelope ID: CBAB0CFC-0EC0-479E-9AFB-49B5E0339C83
