Primary Organization <br />Description <br />The mission of the Hillsborough Arts Council (HAC), a v olunteer-driv en organization, is to enrich the community <br />through the arts. HAC achiev es this by: <br />• fostering appreciation of the arts <br />• engaging div erse audiences in events and programs <br />• connecting artists, organizations, and audiences. <br />HAC provides arts ev ents, programs, and educational opportunities <br />for the people of Hillsborough and surrounding communities. HAC is committed to prov iding access to the arts for <br />educational enrichment, community dev elopment, and economic prosperity. <br />In 2016, HAC created their first part-time paid position to manage programs and v olunteers. This transitioned to a <br />full-time Executiv e Director in 2018. HAC has eleven members serv ing on the board of directors and many <br />v olunteers who contribute time, skills, and knowledge. <br />HAC typically offers twelv e arts programs annually: <br />• Art Walk: Features galleries and artist studios in historic downtown Hillsborough on the Last Friday of the month <br />(January-Nov ember). <br />• Parlor Concerts: Classical, jazz, and folk set in homes in Hillsborough, NC (dates vary). <br />• Last Fridays: Concert Series: Music, crafts, performers, and visual art on the Last Friday of the month (April- <br />September). <br />• Art in the Heart: Art Fair: A juried show and sale of local arts and crafts in the spring of each year (April). <br />• Paint it Orange: Plein Air Paint Out: Artists paint outside at any location in Orange County for this annual <br />competition and W et Paint art sale (September). <br />• Riv er Park Concert: A one-day music festiv al featuring local and regional musicians and food, drinks, and <br />v endors (October). <br />• Handmade Parade: A parade featuring larger-than-life handmade puppets, costumed marchers, and a v ariety of <br />performers (October, odd years only). <br />• Solstice Lantern W alk: A community celebration of the winter solstice and lantern processional along Riv erwalk <br />(December). <br />• HAC Gallery and Gift Shop: Local artisan goods, crafts, and fine art av ailable for sale in Downtown Hillsborough <br />(ongoing). <br />• ArtCycle: The collection of art supplies donated by community members for redistribution to schools and <br />community centers (ongoing). <br />• Public Art: A program committed to new public art projects and fostering an appreciation for art in public spaces <br />(ongoing). <br />• Classic Film Society: Film screenings accompanied by a lecture on the film or a related topic (ongoing). <br />HAC has implemented new programs to meet the COVID-19 gathering restrictions: <br />• HAC Writer’s Series: A v irtual series of interviews, readings and creative writing prompts from local authors <br />• Mobile Platform (working title): a towable platform stage that will host musicians and performers for short sets <br />while ensuring safe gathering sizes and social distancing. <br />• HAC Workshops: Liv e virtual workshops in an assortment of artistic media (v isual, performing, written, culinary) <br />for various skill levels. <br />Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, HAC has serv ed 30,000-35,000 people annually through ev ents and programs. <br />This included an av erage of about 50% Hillsborough residents, 25% residents from other areas of Orange County, <br />and 25% non-Orange County residents.
