W hat are you
requesting funding
for?
A specific program or project
Project/Program
Summary
The Folk Tales Around the W orld Puppet Project prov ides free
community based puppetry programs to children. Folk tales deriv ed
from oral storytelling cultural traditions are adapted into a puppetry
program. The folk tales originate in Africa, Mexico, India and China.
After the puppet performance, children create their own puppets to
re-enact the folk tale. The folk tale puppetry programs will be offered
v irtually and in person (if the OCPL physical space allows for social
distancing).
The program starts with a storytelling of the folk tale. The storytelling
is followed by a puppet show which is an original script adaptation of
the folk tale. The puppet performances use the traditional hand
puppet form of puppetry where the puppeteer is hidden from v iew.
Graphic v isual images (still and mov ing) projected onto a screen
serv e as backdrops/backgrounds and music/sound effects are used
to enhance the story line and v iewer experience. Puppets are crafted
by participants in order to retell the folk tale at home. For the v irtual
program, puppets are constructed with materials found at home
and/or with a prov ided template.
Grant funded community puppetry programs from 2018-2020 hav e
been v ery successful with 941 children participating.
