During the time you are in the Paramedic Academy at DTCC James Johnson, EMS Supervisor
and FTEP Coordinator, will be your supervisor. The scheduling of your weekly EMS unit ride
times will be handled through James in conjunction with the Shift Supervisors. It is vital that
you communicate with James to ensure that you meet your weekly work hour
requirements. We will attempt to have you work the same number of scheduled hours as
any other EMS employee on a 24/72 or 12 hour rotating schedule. This means that you will
rotate between a 36 hour workweek and a 48 hour workweek. Excessive overtime will not
be allowed because we want you to focus on your education. As you know your class is
expected to be 24 hours of classroom hours and an average of 12 – 24 hours of hospital
time per week. There will be a plan to make the time you will have to ride on an ambulance
is consistent. We realize that things might come up where you need to be removed or
added to the schedule on short notice. Early notification is the key to ensure that these
short notice events are handled appropriately and timely. Ensure that you keep the lines of
communications open and check in frequently. If you fail to work the minimum of 36 hours
per week you will be required to use annual leave to make up the difference. Leave without
pay will not be recommended by the Emergency Services Director.

You may be asked when on an EMS unit to staff as a second person. The hours for which
you staff as an EMT (second rider status) are not counted toward the salary payout for school
should there be a breach of contract. Only class, program clinicals and field internship (third
rider trainee status) are counted.

You will still be expected to come to continuing education unless there is a direct conflict in
your program calendar. The Con‐Ed schedule has been established through next June so
you will be asked to schedule around that whenever possible. If a conflict arises please let
James Johnson know as early as possible.

There will be many questions that come up throughout the program. Please try to forward
those questions through James so that we can remain consistent in case the same question
arises with anyone else. Our goal is to be fair and consistent but we will need your help to
do that and James will need you to keep him informed. We are here to assist to in any way
possible. We want to see you succeed and become an asset to Orange County.

We expect you to put in every effort that you can to shine in this program. Remember you are an
extension of Orange County and your actions will be scrutinized. Don’t forget about your families and
take time with them whenever possible. This program will be very demanding and it will put a strain on
your personal life, so you will need to prepare for that. We will be here to assist in whatever way we
can.
DocuSign Envelope ID: 6B2F8A58-C01B-416D-BB50-D8EF5D7B67B5
