Department of Justice
Office of Community Oriented Policing Services
1100 Vermont Avenue, NW, Th Floor
Washington, DC 20530
Dear Peer Review Panel:
~r/aG/i~ed/7s?
This correspondence is in support of the City of Durham's "Durham NC MSA
Interoperability Expansion Project," Public safety communication in the Durham (NC)
metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is difficult due to the incompatibility of the radio
systems operated by the many agencies. The incompatibility of radio systems within
the Durham MSA limits the ability of law enforcement personnel to readily share
pertinent information when they must interface with law enforcement personnel from
other jurisdictions.
As a participating jurisdiction, we look forward to achieving interoperabilitytyithin cur
region by transitioning to an 800 MHz radio system, resulting in a high level of
interoperabilitytyhere little currently exists.
As a partner in this project, the project will support the transition of our conventional
UHF radio system to an S00 MHz radio system, enabling interaperability between the
Durham County Sheriffs Department and other law enforcement, fire and EMS
agencies within the Durham MSA, adjacent MSAs and statewide.
We acknowledge the designation of the City of Durham as the lead agency to serve as
the applicant agency for this project. If grant funds are awarded, the pity of Durham will
be the grantee for the consortium.
Orange County will provide match funds totaling 25% of the federal funds requested for
Orange Catanty's portion of the project as indicated in the project proposal, contingent
upon approval by the Orange County Board of Commissioners at its next regularly
scheduled meeting.
Sincerely,
Roderick Visser
Assistant County Manager
AREA CODE (919) 245-2300 6887331 FAX (919) 644.3004
Ext. 2300
