32
Hot Topics
Stephanie has been working with Shandrika Brown to do a virtual youth expo for JCPC Community
Service and Restitution folks and has been able to meet with almost all of their five counties programs to
come up with ideas and deliverables with youth participating and receiving community service and life
skills. Right now the first one is scheduled for December 21 and they are looking to offer two more, one
in March and one in June. Youth who participate would get up to 7 hours for community service. They
are looking for individuals who would be willing to be peer support or volunteering their time during
some (they will be having three before the end of the FY). Is there additional funds in the admin budget
for Orange County that could help with door prizes? Denise responded to do up a written proposal that
would include what they would be used for, what the items would be, and the amount of the request and
submit to the committee. This would then be put on the February agenda for review/approval since the
Council bylaws no longer allow for email voting.
Gayane wanted to bring to the Council's attention the movement that is happening at the state and federal
levels to reform marijuana laws, in particular the decriminalization in NC from 0.5 to 1.5 ounces. There is
a big difference in weight when looking at dry leaf versus liquid form. There are a lot of questions and
concerns around what they are looking at and what is being discussed. She is particularly concerned about
what this will mean for youth under 18.
The schools are developing plans to gradually return students back to school. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools sent out a survey this week to families to receive their intentions about their desires to return back
starting January 18 or to continue their student's education remotely. They have received 6,000 responses
with the deadline set for today. If anyone has contact with their families, please encourage them to
complete it or reach out to someone to answer questions so that they can make an informed decision. The
last time they surveyed the families they were missing.voices from the community, particularly from the
black.and Latino families. They will have their school social workers make contact, but since there are
many agencies on the call now that work the families, it would be great if they could help remind them to
complete the survey or reach out to their school's principal to ask questions.
This will be Peggy's last JCPC meeting as she will be retiring February 1. However, her last working day
will be January 13. She has enjoyed working with and getting to know everyone.
This will also be Tami's last JCPC meeting. She has decided to step away from her role at Boomerang,
which was a very hard decision. She is really wanting to go back to direct service work and her position
as an ED doesn't fill this. She will be leaving at the end of January and the position has already been
posted.
Upcoming JCPC Meetings
March 24, 2021 • gam-4pm
Funding Committee/Application Presentations
Virtual GoToMeeting
April 2, 2021 • Holiday—need to reschedule
JCPC Meeting
Virtual GoToMeeting
