X27 <br /> <br />A discussion ensured on the request made by the Greater Chapel Hill Fire District Commission. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner' Bennett, seconded by Commissioner McDade, and unanimously adopted, <br />the Greater Chanel Hill Fire Protection District. Commission was granted permission to annex the <br />area described in their petition. <br />It was brought to the attention of the Board that the tenure of the three (3) members of the <br />Greater Chapel Hill Fire Protection District Commission would soon expires. Upon motion of <br />Comad.ssioner Walker, seconded by Commissioner McDade, and unanimously adopted, Alex McMahon, <br />E. G. Merritt and Samuel H. Magill were re-appointed as Commissioners for the Greater Chanel <br />Hill Fire Protection District Commission for a terff-of two (2) years each effective i!. ediately <br />upon the expiration of their present teens. The Clerk was requested to notify each of these <br />Commissioners of the re-appointment.. <br />Mrs. Fred Ellis, representating the United Church Women of Chapel Hill, appeared accompanied <br />by a group of interested citizens from the Chapel Hill area who were interested in volunteering <br />the services of the United Church Women to the Welfare Department. The objective of this committee <br />was to pursue the question of more adequate social service coverage in Chanel Hill and to request <br />the presence of a social worker in an office in Chapel Hill or Carrboro two days a week, this in <br />their opinion, would facilitate the applications for help, and the handling of emergency situations. <br />A discussion ensued on this matter but no action was taken. Mrs. Mcaskill, Welfare Supt., expressed <br />her appreciation to this committee but stated that this type of program could not be handled by <br />volunteer service and due to the '.7elfare policy the records of recipients must be kept confidental. <br />Alex McMahon was recommanded by the Board for re-appointment to the County Welfare Board, as <br />they felt Mr. McMahon had rendered invaluble service and assistance to the County. <br />A letter from Stella Spencer, President of the North Carolina Federation of Business and <br />Professional Women's Club, Inc., was reed by Chairman Stanford. Mrs. Spencer requested that the <br />property owned by the Federation in Cheoel Hill be exempt from scanty tax as the Federation is a <br />non-profit organization. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Jones, seconded by Commissioner Walker, and unanimously adopted, <br />no action was taken and the matter was tabled until a study could be made concerning the tax <br />exempt property in the County. The County Accountant was requested to advise Mrs. Spencer that <br />such a study would be made at a later date and that she would be notified if her request was <br />valid. <br />Dee following resolution was presented from the Agricultural Extension Advisory Board: <br />"Be it resolved that we, members of the Orange County Agricultural Extension Advisory Board, <br />met in regular session this 8th day of May, respectfully request that the Board of County Commissioners <br />consider the urgency for the immediate construction of the county Agricultural Building, and <br />implement same by sopropriation of sufficient funds to get this construction underway at the <br />earliest possible moment. <br />/s/ Z. Miller <br />The County Accountant brought to the attention of the Board that at the present time Orange <br />County had approximately 557,000.00 invested in various Building and Loan Associations. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Walker, seconded by Commissioner McDade, and unanimously adopted, <br />the County Accountant was authorized to seek special legislative authority which would permit <br />Orange County to invest surplus monies with Building and loan Associations. <br />The County Accountant advised the Board that a notice of appeal and exception had been filed <br />by the St. Anthony's, Inc. on the ruling of the County Board of Equalization and Review, in that <br />the Board of Eoualization and Review had refused to adjust the 1961 reel and personal property <br />tax assessments on the property owned by St. Anthony's, Inc. <br />The County Accountant was authorized to secure the service of the W. M. Suss & Company <br />for the purpose of making the 1961 scanty audit. <br />All decisions concerninP, the new parking area and drive located behind the Agriculture <br />Building was to be left to the committee appointed previously by the Board to handle this matter. <br />The following names were drawn to serve as Jurors for the June 26th term of Civil Court: <br />1.
