5 <br /> NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Orange County Board of County <br /> Commissioners, on behalf of the people of Orange County, hereby recognizes and expresses <br /> sincere gratitude to Coach Roy Williams for being an exemplary citizen of the UNC, Chapel Hill, <br /> Orange County, and North Carolina community. <br /> BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, on <br /> behalf of the people of Orange County, congratulates Roy Williams on his retirement, and <br /> hopes that his life journey henceforth will abound with joy and excitement and increased time <br /> for family and friends. <br /> This the 4th day of May, 2021. <br /> Renee Price, Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> A motion was made by Commissioner Dorosin, seconded by Commissioner Fowler, to <br /> approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> Roll call ensued <br /> VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> Chair Price said Coach Williams is an example to the community. <br /> Commissioner Fowler said she thinks the world of Coach Williams, and wishes him all <br /> the best. <br /> Former Commissioner Barry Jacobs said he been professional friends with Roy Williams <br /> for 40 years, and he is an exceptional Coach and person. He said he has always been able to <br /> talk openly with Coach Williams, who is a caring person and a political progressive. He said <br /> Coach Williams had Barack Obama at a practice, and managed to side step going to the White <br /> House in 2017, while Donald Trump was in office. He said Coach Williams is enamored with <br /> the game of golf. He said Coach Williams has chosen to come to Chapel Hill 3 different times <br /> in his life: as a student, an assistant coach and as head coach. He said he is a part of a <br /> tradition from Frank MacGuire to Dean Smith to Bill Gutheridge to Roy Williams to Hubert <br /> Davis, none of whom were ever a head coach before coming to UNC. He said sports often lack <br /> decorum, and he recalled a game in 2007 when a Duke player hit a UNC player in the nose and <br /> made him bleed. He said Coach Williams stood at the court with the Duke coach, and had a <br /> civil conversation. He said he set a good example of how adults can act in stressful times. He <br /> said he greatly appreciates Coach Williams' decorum. <br /> Roy Williams said he is flattered, and is just a little boy from the mountains of North <br /> Carolina. He said he is the luckiest person he has ever known, and while he loved coaching at <br /> Kansas, he always wanted to come home. He said these experiences were wonderful. He said <br /> it was the neatest thing to see Carolina Blue everywhere on the court, and he was honored to <br /> be at UNC. He said he will always be a part of Chapel Hill, and he appreciates the people of <br /> Chapel Hill and Orange County. He thanked the Board for the proclamation. <br /> Chair Price thanked everyone for working on the proclamation, and thanked the <br /> Williams family for attending and contributing to Orange County. <br />
