10 <br /> 1 Older Americans Month — May 2021 <br /> 2 Theme — "Communities of Strength" <br /> 3 <br /> 4 Whereas, Orange County includes over 30,000 persons aged 60 and older who have built <br /> 5 resilience and strength over their lives through successes and difficulties; and <br /> 6 <br /> 7 Whereas, Orange County benefits when people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds are <br /> 8 included and encouraged to share their successes and stories of resilience; and <br /> 9 <br /> 10 Whereas, Orange County recognizes our need to nurture ourselves, reinforce our strength, <br /> 11 and continue to thrive in times of both joy and difficulty; and <br /> 12 <br /> 13 Whereas, Orange County can foster communities of strength by: <br /> 14 . creating opportunities to share stories and learn from each other; <br /> 15 • engaging older adults through education, recreation, and service; and <br /> 16 • encouraging people of all ages to celebrate connections and resilience. <br /> 17 <br /> 18 Now, therefore, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim May <br /> 19 2021 to be Older Americans Month, and urge every resident to recognize older adults and <br /> 20 the people who support them as essential contributors to the strength of our community. <br /> 21 <br /> 22 The 4th day of May, 2021. <br /> 23 <br /> 24 <br /> 25 <br /> 26 Renee Price, Chair <br /> 27 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 28 <br /> 29 A motion was made by Commissioner McKee, seconded by Commissioner Fowler, to <br /> 30 approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 31 <br /> 32 Roll call ensued <br /> 33 <br /> 34 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 35 <br /> 36 Janice Tyler, Department of Aging Director, thanked the Board, staff, and volunteers <br /> 37 who supported the Department of Aging during the pandemic, including the provision of meals, <br /> 38 delivery of medication, phone calls to the isolated, etc. She said programs were converted into <br /> 39 the virtual environment during the pandemic, and this year has brought the community together <br /> 40 and made it stronger. <br /> 41 Heather Altman, Advisory Board on Aging Chair, said Orange County is a strong <br /> 42 community, and the older adults contribute a great deal, including Roy Williams. She <br /> 43 recognized Janice Tyler for her work in the department, and the tireless efforts to provide a <br /> 44 comprehensive range of support to 30,000 people and their families. She said the Department <br /> 45 on Aging never stopped working during the pandemic, and meals were provided, programming <br /> 46 continued, Tax preparation was offered, etc. She said she is thrilled to publically praise Janice <br /> 47 Tyler, and express her heartfelt gratitude. She said she took her mother to the Seymour Center <br /> 48 in March 2020 for exercise class and lunch, and they sat next to Reverend Seymour. She said <br /> 49 her mother died a few months ago, and her last social activity was at the Seymour Center. She <br />
