All pollutable waste material shall be properly disposed in the nearest <br /> landfill unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. Other wastes shall be <br /> disposed at a convenient site located by the Contractor, subject to the <br /> approval of the Engineer. <br /> 3.3 GENERAL <br /> A. Excavation and grading shall include all site grading, roadway and <br /> driveway, trench and structure excavation, backfill, dike, and embankment <br /> construction. Excavation and grading shall also include borrow, disposal <br /> of excess material off-site as indicated, procuring and placing topsoil, <br /> cleanup, and dressing off. This item shall also include all necessary <br /> dewatering, soil aeration (drying), sheathing, bracing, cofferdam work, <br /> pumping, blasting, and protection. <br /> B. All excavation and grading shall be confined to the construction area, as <br /> shown on the Plans, and shall be done in an approved manner, with <br /> proper equipment. <br /> C. Comply with local codes, ordinances, and requirements of agencies <br /> having jurisdiction. <br /> D. All construction operations shall be accomplished in accordance with <br /> applicable regulations of the North Carolina Department of Labor, <br /> Occupational Safety and Health Division. Copies of these standards may <br /> be obtained from the North Carolina Department of Labor, 413 North <br /> Salisbury Street, Raleigh, North Carolina. <br /> E. Slope sides of excavations are to comply with codes, ordinances, and <br /> requirements of agencies having jurisdiction. Shore and brace where <br /> sloping is not possible because of space restrictions or stability of material <br /> excavated. Maintain side slopes of excavations in a safe condition until <br /> completion of backfilling. <br /> F. The Contractor shall be responsible for any dewatering required for site <br /> grading. The Contractor shall provide and maintain whatever means <br /> required for dewatering including ditching, drains, pumping, bailing, and <br /> well pointing. <br /> G. Prevent surface water and subsurface or groundwater from flowing into <br /> excavations and from flooding project site and surrounding area. <br /> 1. Do not allow water to accumulate in excavations.
