The Contractor shall be responsible for the cost of testing of borrow <br /> material which shall include standard density tests (Proctor curves). <br /> 1.4 CLASSIFICATION OF EXCAVATION <br /> A. The following classifications of excavation will be made: <br /> B. Earth excavation includes excavation of obstructions visible on the <br /> surface; other items indicated to be demolished and removed; together <br /> with earth and other materials encountered that are not classified as solid <br /> rock, undercut excavation, or unauthorized excavation. <br /> C. Rock and Boulder Excavation: <br /> 1. The following material classifications, based on the type of <br /> excavation equipment required, shall be used to identify materials <br /> for payment: <br /> a) Soil, Partially Weathered Rock, or Rippable Rock — Soil, <br /> partially weathered rock (PWR), or Rippable Rock shall be <br /> defined as any material that can be removed by a Caterpillar <br /> 350 excavator or equivalent. <br /> b) Rock- Rock shall be defined as any material that cannot be <br /> removed by a Caterpillar 350 excavator or equivalent. The <br /> methodology for excavating such material shall be approved <br /> by the ENGINEER per North Carolina Department of <br /> Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) approval. <br /> BLASTING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED, in portions of the <br /> project delineated on the plans. <br /> c) Intermittent drilling, blasting, or ripping performed to increase <br /> production and not necessary to permit excavation of <br /> material encountered will be classified as earth excavation. <br /> d) Do not perform rock excavation work until material to be <br /> excavated has been cross-sectioned and classified by the <br /> Contractor, and such information provided to the Engineer <br /> for approval.
