1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: May 4, 2021 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 4-f <br /> SUBJECT: 2027 World University Games Update <br /> DEPARTMENT: County Manager <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Background Materials Bonnie Hammersley, 919-245-2300 <br /> Hill Carrow, CEO, NCBC <br /> PURPOSE: To receive information and an update on North Carolina's progress in the <br /> bid process for the 2027 World University Games, an event of the International University <br /> Sports Federation (FISU). <br /> BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Bid Committee (NCBC) is working to bring the <br /> world's largest event for student-athletes to North Carolina and specifically the Triangle <br /> area. In recent months, the NCBC has received requests for presentations to local groups <br /> interested in the bid and prospects for the Games. The NCBC has presented to the <br /> Durham Sports Commission (DSC) Board of Directors, the North Carolina Travel and <br /> Tourism Board, the Planning and Legislative Committee of GoTriangle, and the Cary <br /> Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no immediate financial impact related to this discussion. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is <br /> applicable to this item: <br /> • GOAL: ENABLE FULL CIVIC PARTICIPATION <br /> Ensure that Orange County residents are able to engage government through <br /> voting and volunteering by eliminating disparities in participation and barriers to <br /> participation. <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility <br /> Goal impact related to this discussion. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive this <br /> information. <br />
