ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: August 16, 2005 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~_ <br />SUBJECT: Contracts Between CCHCS, OCS, and Health Department for School Nurses <br />DEPARTMENT: Health <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Contracts <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Rosemary Summers, ext 2411 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To approve the contracts between Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CCHCS), <br />Orange County Schools (OGS) and the Health Department far School Nurse Funding. <br />BACKGROUND: During the budget deliberations in FY 2001-2002, the Board of <br />Commissioners agreed to a four-year plan for achieving a goal of a full-time school nurse in <br />every public school in both the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) and Orange County <br />Schools (OCS) systems. New schools were to include a nurse in the basic staffing required to <br />open a new school. The table below depicts the implementation of the four-year plan as it was <br />authorized on an annual basis: <br /> 2001-02 02-03 03-04 04-05 05-06 06-07 <br />CHCCS 2 new 2 2+ 2 new 4 +1 new 5+ 1 new 6 <br />OCS 1 new 1 1 +1 new 2 +1 new 3 3 <br />New nurses were added in October of each of the years that they were authorized. The <br />additional nurse slated to be added to the CHCCS this year will begin in October as well. The <br />2006-2007 fiscal year will be the first full continuation year of the school nurse plan. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The total cast of the contracts is $505,289 and was authorized in the <br />approved budget for FY2005-2006. The Orange County Schools will receive up to $167,001 for <br />three nurses, and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools will receive up to $338,288 for six <br />nurses. It is anticipated that the full cost in fiscal year 05-07 will be $545,232 depending on the <br />state salary scale for school nurses. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the contracts <br />and authorize the Chair to sign. <br />
